Business owners in the SME sector across Africa find it difficult to manage and track aspects of their business such as sales, inventory, expenses and other customers relations.
After conducting a series of interviews, surveys, and focus groups, I found these points below to be the main pain-points for business owners.
- Difficulty in tracking their sales and creditors.
- Using books to manually record receipts, invoices and sales makes it inefficient when finding creditors and tracking sales growth.
- Difficulty in managing their inventory.
- Manually managing large inventory slows order processing and comes with a high labor cost.
- Difficulty in tracking growth of their business.
- Lack of business insights to help track growth and make informed decisions.
To address this, I designed a web and mobile application that would help business owners track and manage their business.
1. Using invoices and receipts to record sales and track creditors.
2. Simple inventory management tool with reminders to keep track of product quantity, availability and location.
3. Using the bookkeeping data to generate insights and analytics to help business owners make informed decisions.
I first begun my mapping out the value chain and all the various stakeholders who would directly or indirectly use the application. That included Freelancer professionals such as Photographers, Software developers, and Makeup artists. also interviewed Small Business Owners who all wanted certain features that tied more closely to the maturity level of their businesses.
Using all the information gathered, I worked with my team to build out a set of requirements from my research involved in the value chain. I worked with my team to create journey-maps for each user type and their desired workflow.
Using the technical specs, I designed wireframes for several interfaces to illustrate the user experience and their workflow. I used Figma and Adobe XD to do all the prototyping and design.
The final designs met all the needs to the client. Freelancers and small businesses in Africa are now able to do the following:
1. Easy tracking of creditors to reduce bad debt.
2. Easy tracking of best and poor performing products and services.
3. A medium to receive customer feedback to help improve products and services.
4. Easy tracking of sales growth and more
